Castle in the Sky did a number on kids/teens growing up. Their imaginations have never recovered.
It's why so many boys (and manchildren) are obsessed with technology and anime and saving the heroine/waifu and making friends with wholesome criminals and being a rebel and etc.
Also the protagonist is a manlet.

There's 2 different types of ghibli movies.
There's the really good ones starting with Cagliostro going all the way up to and including Mononoke.
Then everything after that is aimed at ten year old girls coz that makes more money in the anime industry.
