Spielberg’s early work used a lot of this ‘people talking over each other’ to try to impart a sense of organic conversation, but he learned soon enough that all it does is irritate people and create headaches.
So the Safdies, being overrated hacks, take that technique and turn it up to 11, creating an audio track as pleasant as a wheelbarrow of pots and pans being tipped down a concrete stairwell.
Mix in a complete lack of charisma among the cast and a plot thinner than tissue paper and the whole exercise is an irredeemable mess of unpleasantness.
