Did people complain about Mary Sues and girl-power when these movies were popular?
Did people complain about Mary Sues and girl-power when these movies were popular?
no because they were hot
The difference is that they didn't receive any preferential treatment for being female protagonists. The movies made ZERO reference to them being female aside from normal things (Alice being the spouse of that guy, etc...).
It's the forcing of the girl-power shit that's annoying.
Incel had not been born yet
Prey made no special mention of the protagonist being a woman, yet that movie was apparently a girl-power vehicle.
it was truly a differrent time, no nigger/roastie/fag fatigue
No, because the internet Nazis hadn't brainwashed incels into thinking everything anti-white Jewish propaganda.
I haven't watched it so I can't comment.
However, Ghostbusters is a perfect example of forcing female protagonists.
Nobody complained then because that didn't describe over 80% of movies released in the previous two decades and you know it.
It does, but imo, it's not done in the wrong way.
No, back then people weren't as gay as they are now. Not as many muslims either
unironically this
Even when those were "popular", we weren't expected to take their protagonists *seriously*. They were campy, fun, over the top shlock; that's how they were made, that's how they were advertised, that's how they were enjoyed by viewers. Thinking they were trash rather than fun, or trashy *and* fun wasn't a heinous thought-crime that would get you paraded around social media as a hateful bigoted misogyhomoistaphobe because the protagonists were women. Pointing out that their protagonists were over-the-top and Sueish prompted replies of "yeah that's the point, dude it's about vampires vs werewolves chill" not "Uuuuh, ACKSHOLEE these are a nuanced and sophisticated allegory for the experience of women in a misogynistic patriarchal society, a POWERFUL reflection of our current times, and FRANKLY I find your dismissal of such a SERIOUS subject disgusting!".
But you knew that already you monkeypoxed discord troon, so well done, have your (you) and fuck off back.

Yes, Alice is textbook fanfic Mary Sue. She isn't part of the original stories, and is both made the entire focus and is constantly shown to be better and more important than the original characters.
"Mary stu" and "Gary stu" are less of a problem in single-installment action movies because the draw in these is more marveling at how the protagonist charges into danger rather than complicated plots, interpersonal drama, or character arcs. It's more of a problem in serial works like shounens or TV dramas.
Or nu-wars. But Underworld was far from the typical "mary sue". She grew, there was a plot and backstory, and she had to overcome difficulties. If you add in the other two, especially the third, then sure, but those were shit cash grabs
fpbp
Underworld she’s an immortal vampire, who still gets her ass licked by other vampires. RE Alice is a genetically modified super soldier, who still gets her ass kicked sometimes. Prey she’s an empowered Comanche woman who ain’t gonna take no alien back talk.
Dumbass
This is false. Literally false
This retarded asshole did not watch prey
He lies for 4vhsn clout
naru gets knocked the fuck out and also captured. what are you talking about?
