What's the point in winning back Kim's respect if he is locked up forever and can't ever be with her anymore?

It's just a losing move, regardless of how you look at it. He could have potentially won her back after doing the 7 years, even if the chances were very low. Instead he choose the option where he loses her with 100% certainty. It just doesn't make sense.

And what’s the point of taking the 7 years, Kim hating your guts, and you getting out just to be met by an even more miserable life. Why can't he just make new friends? Why can't he just try to change while in prison for 7 years? Does it really just come down to the fatalistic admission that Chuck was 100% right that he can't change? If so, that's very bleak and deterministic. I'm not saying it's wrong, but it is kind of jarring in fiction when the creator just goes 'welp, this person is just sick and evil and even if they recognize it, they can't change."

Nippy was singularly kino. Every good lie has an element of truth in it (as seen by Saul Gone's insanely good speech against the feds) but Gene distracting the guard was just the truth.
