I've always knew about this film but I've never seen it until now. The cinematography, the technical achievements, Heston's acting, music, drama, all of this is simply impeccable to this day. You would never see a scene comparable to the chariot race today. I've been in a spiritual vacuum and deep depression for a long time, and I felt like this film lifted my soul in a way, some of the scenes felt inspired. I also think it was a genius choice to never show Jesus' face. It's so simple to over-do scenes with Jesus in films, to make them cheesy and overdramatic. But Jesus presence is so strong you don't even need to show his face. The scene where he gives water to Judah? If it was a different film they would do like ten close ups to Jesus' face and peasants in the background shitting pissing crying and going
>oh my god look he gives the water to the slave even though the bad guys romans can punish him for that, what an absolute mad man he is!
Here less is more. I think this is on of the cases when a film is as close to perfection as it can be. It's pure kino.

RAMMING SPEEEED

Not gonna lie, I've heard that this movie is great but I never knew it was a Christian movie. Gonna have to watch it now

They didn't spare any punches in the old days. I'd advice you to go even longer back and watch Gone With The Wind. You'll be amazed and also saddened to see the craft and labor lost in Hollywood.

Good post.

It was the most moving movie I ever saw.
The cast even the extras were flawless.

I also fell in love with Ben Hur's sister.

run time*

>Gone With The Wind.
user I'm in my 20s and I've seen this movie as a kid because it was one of my mom's faves. I wasn't that interested in the story but from the technical standpoint it was impressive indeed. I've seen a shit ton of old movies back then, european, japanese, american, but I left some of the biggest Hollywood classics, since I didn't believe they have much of a value, and usually after catching up I didn't have any regrets, but with Ben-Hur I felt ashamed I haven't seen it until now

>You would never see a scene comparable to the chariot race today.

Star Wars did it better and longer.

I was same only seen the movie recently. everytime it was on TV it was always half way though so i never bothered.
Glad I finally saw it. Its now my all time fave movie (used to be forbidden planet)

Honestly you appreciate Gone more with age. The story has nuances you miss as a junior. I rewatched it some month ago and was really pleased with how snappy and clever the dialogue was. Even got a few laughs out of me.

>It goes on, Judah. The race is not over.

he acted that scene so well it genuinely felt like he had every bone broken in him.

Except not everything in it was real and it was done like 18 years later

been watching orson welles movies and humphrey bogart movies and it just makes you realize how much of a dark age we are in when it comes to the arts

>humphrey bogart
make sure you watch Sahara.

>less is more
>while talking about ben hur
lmfao

It's a GREAT movie, but the Jesus scenes are still pretty cheesy t b h. However you cannot deny the greatness, especially the soundtrack, Ben Hur is up there with Lawrence of Arabia as the greatest movies ever

I talked specifically about Jesus scenes
