Opening from the front is the only logical design. If they were under heavy fire they would leap over the sides of the craft while the door stays up. If it opened from the back the troops would've needed to tread through deep water which means their equipment load wouldn't be as efficient as it could've been. Usually beach landings would be pre-ceded by a naval bombardment of the surrounding land to reduce casualties of the invading force but unfortunately the bombardment wasn't as effective as it could've been which is why this scene happens in every WW2 movie ever. I wish I could be half the man those men were.
