The scene was a gateway for impressionable children to develop the fetish later in life. In this scene (and most transformation scenes in movies or tv) is shown as humiliating and weird. It's like it turned into a fear of the viewer, to an extent even empathizing with the character by imagining how embarrassing it would be to be in that situation. That fear gets compartmentalized and over time turns into a fascination, leading to one eventually looking for more examples of the fetish, and then developing a fetish for it themselves.
For me it was >Eyes wide in terror as she is completely helpless and can only watch as her body continually expands. >The close-ups of her ass literally blowing up and her hips widening. >How humiliating and embarrassing it would be ("she's fat lol"), especially in front of an entire crowd that stares at her in awe and confusion. >The close-up of her looking directly into the camera, begging for mercy, as her cheeks puff out as the cherry on top in her humiliation. >The way the purple coloration begins in her nose and spreads over her entire body. >Her moaning as her body sloshes with the expanding juice the entire time. >The music creating a horrifying atmosphere but instead only makes it more arousing.
It's weird but when I was a kid I would always get excited when they'd play this on Disney Channel/XD. I'd lock my door to my bedroom and lower the volume whenever I heard footsteps near me like it was actual porn. I would sit there the whole movie until it got to Violet blowing up and I would pop a boner while just staring and desperately trying to see her belly button through the darkness.

Yep. was 10 when I saw it, fucking got me good. I remember feeling so weird seeing the original movie on VHS, not really knowing why, but just wondering how it felt for Violet, how embarrassing it was to get all big, how she would have felt everything touching her. Then seeing this- people forget that CGI wasn't as prevalent as it was today. Seeing that happen blew my mind. The music, the build up- "Mother, what's happening to me?"- Heightened every bit of it. So fucking weird, and even now 17 years later it still gets to me.
this scene gave me my first boner at 8 yo to this day i have a Breast/Ass expansion fetish, but other forms of expansion don't do it for me at all

If anything the public would be more interested in what they saw, why and then on to the next weird thing. Violet exploding would have to have some level of care in it. Her just dying in this universe, like that would be a no. Same for if it's gruesome in any way... Whatever Wonka has daddy issues and is super autistic.
