It did a decent job at being a show depicting nerds as protagonists, unlike bing bong theory where they're just the butt of the joke. Let me give an example:

Penny walks in the room and they're playing D&D and a laugh track plays. The joke is just that they're playing D&D and that's something nerds do.
>IT crowd
They're playing D&D and funny stuff happens during it that you can relate to if you played D&D. The joke is not that they're playing D&D but the kind of stuff that happens when you play D&D

In IT crowd they're the relatively normal ones and everyone else around them is crazy as opposed to just LOL LOOK THEY NERDS
