it doesn't need to be attached all around, hell it doesn't even need to be attached at all, it could rest atop a full face mail aventail like the Normans were doing with their nasals as late as the 1200s
furthermore you ignore the possibility that any possible attachment points were made of a perishable substance like leather that has long since decayed and rotted away over the course of more than 1000 years
