Could you say the Japanese kino selection compares to the South Korean?
Just watched "Ran" after switching from SK to JP films. Never seen a Kurosawa film before, but looking for more Japanese kino. Please no anime or Kurosawa, suggest great quality or cult following Japanese films. I have already watched: - Shoplifters (2018) - Audition (2000) - 13 Assassins (2010)
All I have seen of Kitano is his video game appearences, and that scene of the pink frisbee from Sonatine.
Quentin Tarantino spoke well of Sonatine and did a prelude ramble about it, it was apparently influential to him. Is there any particular Kitano work that rivalled Sonatine in fame?
Liam Barnes
Probably Hana-bi.
Joshua Morgan
hanabi is easily the best then id say boiling point. for his lighter films kikujiro and kids return.
I'm not an officiando on jap cinema or anything, but I would recommend, "The Fable." This is a yakuza action film that features a hit man trying to meld with ordinary existence amidst the infamy and challenges of his trade. The film was made within the past three years, it's based off of some manga with VERY behind English language releases, and It's pretty damn good.
Anything starring Tadanobu Asano, he is a kino machine.
Logan Ramirez
Thanks for the recommendation. Have you read the manga or recommend it alongside the watch? Apparently the EN TL was finished about a month ago and I'm all for source material first.
Jack Perry
The manga's better, read it and then watch
Aiden Morris
I haven't read the manga myself, I only know it exists and has like 7% of it released in English because I was looking up information about the film after I watched it. I did find this interesting panel when doing an image search for the books.
