So parents gave some kids other musical instruments and others looked into the popbands which were exploding at the time.

So you had coming up some very talented kids (and some less so) which joined with South Korean music industry in camps that was itself highly modelled on the countries corporate culture and snowballed thanks to Koreas foothold in the production side. Then for Kpop they borrowed what worked for Jpop only taking it one-step further.

Thing is Japan could easily have kept going, it's schools are split between Jazz and Classical music which gives it a distinctive sound but Japan absolutely refuses to innovate on things that are already working so continually other countries just end up eating them alive.
