I think it is one of the good deconstructions of a genre because it gives some of the best the genre has to offer, and then really digs inside of it. It is very earnest and heartfelt though, which most modern deconstructions lack. You are supposed to really empathize, not so much sympathize with Shinji, which is big problem for modern audiences I think; it takes a maturity and knowledge of Japanese culture that just doesn’t exist now.

I love the one bit about Asuka using a historical reference to tell Shinji she wants to fuck, but she forgets that Shinji's just a regular high school student and wouldn't know the same obscure stuff she learned in university.
