There's so much more going on in that scene. Walt is trying to get his family away when all signs indicate he's just killed Hank and there's no way he can explain it rationally to them. Skylar finally confronts him and JR takes her side. He ends up holding a bloody knife poised over Skylar, again with all indications being he's just attacked his wife and JR is retelling it as that over the phone to the police.
You're seeing Walt's entire life crumbling around him and no clever way for him to talk his way out of the situation. He tries to keep what little connection he still has to his family, his daughter, by committing someone as unmistakably evil as taking a baby girl away from her mother.
