Many think Indonesia is the only Southeast Asian country that has the potential to become a global superpower, but in reality, Indonesia is extremely fractured and internally weak society. Moreover its economic growth though high will never catch up with its population growth. In fact, Indonesia is almost poised for another 1998 style collapse after the current Jokowi administration leaves.
The Southeast Asian countries which have the potential to become regionally dominant, are Vietnam and the Philippines:
Vietnam >world's second largest manufacturing center after China >East Asian >80 million population >has the potential to become next Japan
Philippines >Western and English-speaking >diaspora control several major Asian economies incl Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore etc >in the process of taking over Australia, Canada, many EU countries and the US west coast >over 100 million people
These countries have vastly more potential than Indonesia and India as a matter of fact

Our country is a joke ruled by the descendants of landed aristocrats. Our only internationally competitive corporations are our food companies who did not have the benefit of being de facto monopolies when they were founded.
Our agriculture, industry, and service sectors are all ruled by leaders who are too cheap to spend money on innovation and developing our human capital, not realizing (or not caring) that the Philippines will be completely obsolete once african nations industrialize in the next century.
All our best and brightest just leave the country for the US or Canada.
