Japan has 125 million population, that is about the same as France and Italy combined

In the developed world the US is by far the largest country and Japan is easily the second largest country.

This is close but glossy over some critical facts.

Navy: Japan on paper has arguably the best conventional navy in the world (US, UK and France all have nuclear vessels), but the Japanese navy is 100% geared towards defense, not offensive operations. As an example, Japanese submarines do not have any missile capabilities, just torpedos, this is like a tiger that has no teeth or claws, still dangerous but no where near its full potential. In contrast, SK submarines have SLBMs fitted on their latest submarines, probably the best conventional submarines in the world. In addition, SK is developing nuclear submarines which are intended to scorched earth NK if necessary but can be theoretically utilized anywhere in the world. Also, Japan's aircraft carriers are refitted helicopter carriers which can support F35B vtols, F35Bs cost more than the F35A due to the vtol capabilities but are otherwise far inferior in actual combat capabilities. SK also has the same helicopter carriers, the plans for a proper aircraft carrier have been postponed, but it essentially means that SK will likely either refit the helicopter carriers or buy from the UK or France. That said, future administrations may go back to the proper aircraft carrier plans as there are powerful corporate military industrial complex companies in SK that are actively lobbying for these to be built (not to mention its very popular with the people as well).

Air Force: Essentially the same, both have a mix of F35s, F15s, and F16s. SK has more F35s and F16s, Japan has more F15s. However, while both plan to acquire more F35s, Japan plans to operate up to 150 F35s, SK will probably get to 100 F35s. That said, SK also has the KF21 that will have an initial order of 120 and potentially get to well above 300 units, the KF21 is a 4.5 gen fighter that fulfills an air superiority role whereas the F35s are multirole, so while and F35 is better for bombing missions, the KF21 will be better at securing air space. Also, SK has the FA50 and while the F35s and KF21s are the real threats in an all out war scenario number of aircrafts count and the FA50 is essentially a modern F16 both in design, components and joint developed by KAI and Lockheed Martin, but fitted to carry the latest munitions and given the $30 to $40 million cost is cheaper than other modern jets so can put more in the skies to supplement the F35s and KF21s.

Army: This is not close, SK easily has the best land forces in the world other than the US. Their weaponry from large weapons to individual weapons are all essentially the best available in the world and all are also the most expensive in the world.

Main battle tanks: K2 black panthers (too many capabilities to list here but as an example the main gun has a targeting range of 10km with a greater kinetic force and accuracy than any other mbt, in comparison, the M1a2sep3 has a main gun range of 5km) and supplemented by K1 (essentially M1a2 knock offs)

Infantry fighting vehicles: K21, nothing in Japan let alone the world comes close to this ifv and SK has over a thousand units

Self propelled artillery: K9 thunder, again the same, the best sp artillery and SK has thousands of these weapons

Assault rifle: Daewoo K2, cost more than the US M4 and 2x German HK416, but is considered a short barrel M4 with the durability of an AK

If SK could land ~300,000 combat troops onto Honshu and ~50,000 combat troops onto Kyushu + sustained logistical lines it would be game over

Yes SK has a strong and fairly large military, but their stuff is neither the best in the world nor would they be able to land any of it in Japan
