Funnily enough the thing that makes modern italians the most distinct from ancient ones is greek inputs from migration after they took the region. The area most related to the romans who went on to inhabit Hispania are modern lombards at 80s% genetic similarity while the south gets as low as 20s% and everything inbetween varies. The NW and NE regions also have significant differences but not as high, 60s I believe, probably due to their geographic position inviting other forms of inputs and migratory impact from germanics. If you're a modern roman(regionally) you're ripe for taking good genetic ownership both from the romans and the ancient greeks, it's not particularly surprising nor should it be that a lot of greeks moved to the cultural center right next door.
