My dad said back then people were really quite religious actually which was one of the reasons a lot of people initially supported the departure of the secular shah in favour of a islamic republic (not knowing it would end up in a corrupt theocracy).

It's quite simple, the country Iran, despite being Islamic and third world, has a population that reads a lot of books and cares a lot about STEM. People who go to STEM fields and people who read a lot of books tend to be irreligious. That's why China is more atheist than Qatar, despite China being far less wealthy.
