That basically happened in vietnam when china invaded them in the 80s. I dont think there are a lot of examples of neighbouring countries going to all out war with each other in contemporary history since WW2. Its probably a pretty hard thing to do, everyone in the invaded country is fighting for its existence while maybe 95% of the invading country are either not involved or dont give a shit.
Having said that, russia still controls an area of ukraine the size of greece.
