In 2000, everyone was expecting Russia to be as rich per capita as Spain by 2010. Instead, the bulk of the population is living off of poverty wages and there's no real hope of a better future. It isn't about morality, it's about having a love for your own people.

there was no "NATO expansion", just countries that chose to join NATO because they feared that the Soviet empire would come back sooner or later
and given the current situation, they were right

The situation would be ten times worse if we didn't let any of the eastern bloc countries join NATO and Putin started sperging out anyway (which he would have because there was a massive financial incentive to keep the Yeltsin era kleptocracy going instead of allowing a true democracy)

The question isn't morality or international law, it's just that Putin is terrible at running a country and Russia's potential as a country is crippled because of it. If Russia had the same kind of economic growth as Japan or China, it could easily reclaim its former glory, but instead king monke just steals.

It could be a lot better and would probably be a lot more powerful if putin would've followed the state capitalism model that china created. Instead your military can't even advance 200km across the border and the economy is owned by a few guys who build palaces and offshore the money in foreign real estate.
