If they get rid of the monarchy, they'll have to replace it with some other form of head of state, which will require compensation, protection, living arrangements, etc. And then there's the risk that the head of state won't be non-political, so you could end up with a source of instability in your political system.
Better to just pay these retards 20M pounds or whatever it is to let them have their larp and perform the occasional state function.

It's a point that can be argued, but from a legal perspective it's an complete unknown. We're a country where legal precedent is largely dictated by convention, and there is no convention for the crown estates. There is nothing else like it in existence so who knows what would happen if the monarchy was abolished.
