why shouldn't Russia have been able to integrate in the EU? We already had close trade relationship, that would've just made it easier. Adopt the same standars, integrate your space program into ESA, send your students on Erasmus, and eventually adopt the euro. Ofc this would require Russians to no longer have great power delusions and submit to decisions being made in Brussels, but Russia would be a huge voting block in Brussels then too and Europe would be genuinely independent of China and the US with the resources that Russia could provide.

On USSR-USA Cold War it was driver of excalation, gets ton of money and silently gaining the power. Russia just never do that because we have great Chinese lobby that pushes hard Chinese interests.
