I can only speak for germany but at this point neither church stands for anything, they both just repeat mainstream opinions. the lutherans may be worse since they were too heavily hit by ww2 and never recovered so they think trying to ape the current opinion will save them but it just makes them more irrelevant.

it actually matters because in germany you have to pay a tax to the church if you're a member. so if you leave you don't pay anymore which hurts them a lot. the catholic church gets billions out of germany every year.

I guess they feel the religion has lost its identity or that the authorities (the church) does nothing to enforce its own norms and traditional ideals. The church in Mexico has always been thirsty for power and money anyway, it's no surprise why they don't care anymore about what their followers do or don't do.
