American's in high school look like they're in their 20s or thirties most of the time too, I've seen tv shows where the teacher actually looks younger than the pupils.

As a german kid who got bullied a lot and even get punished by my parents for it, I would disagree.
They broke my fingers 12 times. Put out cigarettes on my arm, punched in my teeth in so I had to wear bracers(+2 scars on my lower lip), and a broken nose.
Stole my lunch/breakfast often.

My school books got destroyed regularly and my parents beat me up for it because I "didn't take care of my books". We were rather poor and the books were pretty expensive.

I guess I would've been the perfect school shooter.

This - oh so imprtant - social dynamic didn't teach me anything, didn't make me a man or toughen me up.
It just broke me, made me fail school, drop out and never learn a job.

It always triggers me to no end when I see girl being bullied in media, because I have never seen anything like that in RL. I have seen boys being bullied often but girls were always immune for some reason.

You have to remember this show is set in the 80s when bullying was still cool. Nowadays you will likely be expelled or arrested for calling someone a fag on facebook. Bullying is part of human nature. There are some methods a teacher can use to mitigate it, but generally, it does happen to an extent.
