There's half a dozen confluent factors that all within the broader spirit of American decline. The simplest excuse is that there is an irreconcilable divide between the average person and what college educated elite types want. Historically this was tempered by (largely protestant) senses of duty and professionalism. However that has been discarded and the elite continue to produce media that exists to appease their sense of narcissism and esoteric social politics. This has broadly lead to a negative feedback loop where the denial of elite media enlightenment is held in contempt by the elite and causing them to double down. (You) can't be correct because you represent everything they hold in contempt. So they continue to produce more garbage instead of correcting.

An example would be those Star Wars sequels. The honest admission would be that Star Wars is an aspirational film for young men who like space ships and laser swords. They can't accept that however because it would reflect not only the political worldview of low class people but it also reflects a normative culture (men and women are different and like different things) they hold in disdain; so it must be subverted. Then it doesn't work because the product no longer reflects reality or even an audience.
