its more "realistic" and less pleasing story but they had no way of knowing that and their job was to keep the bats distracted for as long as possible in order to save the world so thats what they did
same thing with the russian plot. it doesnt seem to have effected anything but from the characters point of view it was worth a shot and they didnt really have anything else better to do so they took a chance on it with the idea that in some way it may at least help their kids
