This is the only time Bethesda's shitty engine, animation and autistic voice acting all works perfectly. Oblivion is like a fairytale world and all of the flaws just work to make it charming and immersive. Or maybe I just played it when I was 13 and have nostalgia goggles.

Mostly the latter. Oblivion got a lot of mileage out of the fact it was still very new. Compare it to most 3D rpg's at the time and it actually felt like a living world. Nowadays, the entire thing is mostly unintentionally hilarious and Morrowind is generally a better experience.

I played it for the first time in my mid 20s, not too long ago, and I agree about the charm. It's not just nostalgia.
