Because American is a nation of consoomers. There are definitely people who need trucks in this country but a huge portion of truck/SUV owner buy it more to show off their massive vehicle than to fulfill a practical need.

american roads are like three times as wide as ours. their cities have grown in a completely different way from ours as did the road networks. driving a huge truck would be a pain in the ass for me because I would need extreme focus not to crash into anything or anyone. then there's gas prices which of course a lower in america

Gas tax is extremely minimal compared to other countries and doesnt even come close to paying for infrastructure. In comparison to the amount of subsidies oil gets + funding the almighty US armed forces that stand ready to ensure a stable supply of cheap oil it's a tiny charge
