I kinda understand why it was done.
The original structure reach a point where it would crumble and would probably kill some retard teenager doing a silly tiktok (I call it the will of god, but whatever). So the Turkish had the decency of say, hey, let's do a restoration to make it look like it was when it was originally built.
It was this, or let it crumble into dust...

Maybe they would have used different materials, like stone quarry from a local source (or most likely, a pagan temple), no cement, no steel, etc.
