What I like in Russian movies is that the emotions are more well built, natural and logical. It makes everything more relatable and touching/tense.
I watched this series, To the lake, recently. It's kind of decent, not too good, but something that struck me is that at some point the main character gets stabbed and they have to stitch him up without tranquillizers. They really drag that scene out, his wife can't thread a needle because she's shaking, his father cries in a corner and starts drinking again, and he screams in agony. I felt bad for the guy and empathized with the whole situation, I could feel the tension.
In US media the stitching part is glossed over, done off screen or used to show what a badass the character is as he takes it in silence. Like everything happening is just a tool used to move the story forward, without any real stakes to it. Then of course he gets an infection and needs antibiotics. So the whole segment feels very life like. The rest of the series is questionable but it had a few gems of interactions where I kept thinking "this could be my family, they would react like this".
Sputnik is very touching as well because the emotional depth of the characters is very well built as well.
