A huge chunk of the West Coast is red. East Coast less so going off of landmass.

Very rural/isolated, plus most of the farming is corporate or done by large farmers, and most of the crops are monocultures of soybeans or corn, and so even if you are lucky enough to own a farm, you still probably sit in your house most of the day. If you don't do that you probably work in mining or oil, which sometimes pays good money, but even then you have nothing to spend it on or do with it other than drink. A lot of the places that are reddest are the Indian reservations, which are often quite grim.
