The immigrant has been raised up with stories about their parents sacrifice, how they slaved away their entire life so that they could give their kids a happy future, etc, the burden is immense and crippling
International students especially Chinese students don't seem to care as much and don't feel as much pressure from their rich parents

The significance of being a nerd is that you invest more time and energy into the education system, so the effects of what the education system produces are amplified in the most studious individuals. It wasn't always the case that the most learned people were more likely to be kissless virgins, you know.
