Ukraine is required because there is a natural barrier in a form of karpatian mountains.
That way there’s no threat from southwest, no threat from south (Caucasus), absolutely no threat from the east (urals, Pacific Ocean), no threat from the north (arctic) and the only thing you have to defend is northwest which is a basically a corridor/chokepoint.
