But their achievements, their contributions to the advancement of mankind, are relatively scarce compared to other civilisations, especially the West. They have the Four Great Inventions—papermaking, printing, gunpowder, and the compass—and then pretty much nothing. If you picked a random Western genius such as Newton, Lavoisier or Euler, they'd just be one among many. Certainly, all three of them fathered a field, but many other great European men have this distinction. But if they, by some twist of fate, had somehow been Chinese, you can be sure that they would be hailed as the greatest Chinese genius in history; this coming from a 3000 year-old civilisation, whereas the West is between 1500 and 1100 year-old.
Why is Chinese civilisation so underachieving compared to others?

also wrt asian science japan is still behind europe but esp in the 20th century they contributed a lot to electronics, biology/medicine, and pure mathematics to an extent

the rest of asia doesnt even come close in this regard (korea is beginning to but theyre still not even close)
