Pretty bad to be honest. Mostly variety shows with reaction boxes and people doing mundane shit like eating and brushing their teeth. Some food shows. Some low budget dramas. The commercials actually have more production value than the TV content. It's weird, the commercials have million dollar budgets and the shows are public access tier.

The Japanese are masters of the human interest story. For instance, there's a show I watch where they will put a camera crew in a random retail establishment (supermarket, electronics store, store for fireworks etc) for 3 days and interview random people. You get a lot of really interesting life stories since nips are very in interviews a lot of the time.
Another one I watch is where they literally just 1 camera guy that asks random people on the street if they can go to their house and get a tour. There are some episodes that are really joyous for lack of a better term because they go to the house of a family that you can tell love each other and have a happy life and that feeling transfers a bit to the viewer, at least to me.
There's an authenticity to their human interest stories that I never felt watching my local stuff. Maybe Im just a dumb weeb cause I've spent 4 years learning this language just to watch random shit on TV.
As for the stereotypical whacky variety shows, they're not enjoyable because in contrast to the authenticity of the human interest stuff, there's a very obvious and fake veneer that everyone puts on. Also Japanese humor is the worst I've ever seen.
