Why would the current owners want their net worth to go down? It's something that affects companies as well. If a bank owns a large number of properties in high end areas, they want the line to keep going up, otherwise the stockholders will be angry about bad investments not yielding results.
Human societies are all about 'Fuck you, got mine'. Unless you get extremely lucky or you are born wealthy (which is just luck anyway), you will always get fucked by people in power.
