Most of Asia and even parts of Africa are much poorer than Latin America, and yet they have significantly lower crime rates even with more poverty.
Is this just due to the drug trade?

A non meme answer is that these places have huge gaps between riches and poor, leading to more resentment between social classes and more conflict aka more crime. A poor village in the countryside in LatAm will most likely be very safe. The dangerous parts are urban areas, where crime is an attractive alternative for desperate people. I'd be crazy mad as well if I saw penthouses and BMWs from my shitty favela.
