Why are Japanese comics (Manga) so much better than western comics?

Because they unironically bother doing it. Compared the amount of releases with anywhere else. It is not even close. They have a manga about bread making, dictionary making and whatever, I don't think there is any country that comes even close to it.

western comics =/= capeshit, literally everything you like about manga came from western comics, there is no akira, ghost in the shell, bubblegum crisis etc without jean giraud, aka moebius

Western comics are mostly about making a franchise and then keeping that particular franchise going forever swapping through multiple writers and artists but Japanese comics usually have one set writer/artist telling their specific story.

Comics take themselves so seriously it becomes impossible to tolerate the god awful writing they have. It's they like they purposefully try to make them as cringy as possible. Manga on the other hand is very childish so you can easily ignore all the flaws

most ukiyoe during the meiji period were basically comics intended for public consumption, ukiyoe just eventually evolved into manga

Japanese people actually buy Manga so the market is bigger and they don't just milk the same old franchises. It's honestly quite grim comics as a medium have so much potential and in the west we just flushed it away. In the UK the only thing people actually read is the Beano as kids and then we just watch American Capeshit films despite the fact we had some really good comics of our own.
