part of their strategy is to focus on inherently divisive issues in the West. MIT last year released a study on this subject and found that in the lead up to the 2020 Federal Elections, 19 out of the 20 top Facebook pages were run out of troll farms that were likely operated by Russians.

these pages exposed 140 million americans/Westerners to identity politics issues such as tranny shit. the pages targeted both right and leftist audiences.

that’s just one example out of dozens that there is hard evidence for. some of the stuff that’s happened in regards to disinformation is pretty funny. like there were several very large subreddits who lost a significance percentage of users when Reddit deleted accounts connected to Russian IP’s after the war started.

Russia has been spending an insane amount of resources and time to influence the West because of the hard power disparity between them and the US+EU+Japan+Canada+Australia+South Korea.

disinformation is not just an asymmetric tactic for Russia, it is a central element of their defense policy. one of the most frustrating things is that supposedly the Dod/Pentagon is fully aware of it, but the dinosaurs in Congress have allowed Russia to get like a 6 year head start with virtually no response until this year.

but it’s starting to change, and it will be interesting to see what is going to happen as Russias tactics lose power in the West. it is going to take years to sort it out, but i think it will in fact happen and suddenly Russia is going to have a fully aligned “Western” world putting their target on Russias back.
