An one bedroom in SFO or NYC in a nice would run like 5k something (probably a bit less but just assume that). Even with food and bills for like 2k a month, they still have like 3k to spare on a typical 10k after taxes a month tech salary in those area.

Roommates. I work in Boston and a couple years ago I lived with roommates, that's what most young people do because rent is absolutely fucking expensive in that city. Realized that I hate living with others and decided to move to a city 40 minutes away from my job. It's a lot cheaper and I can my own place, plus I don't have to drive, I just take fe train because fuck driving in Boston.
