i paid out of pocket for my first root canal, the dentist gave me a good deal at $1600 for the entire process including the crown. about a year later i discovered that i needed yet another root canal, this time i decided to use my insurance which turned out to be a mistake, because they could only do the surgery and put a gold filling in, a crown would have cost $700 which is the exact same price that the first dentist charged me. now i feel like going back to the guy who DOESN'T take my insurance, just because i know he did a good job with my first crown.

Actually, what would drive down medical costs is when the prices are transparent and known beforehand. When you get a procedure, it is in a shroud of mystery until you get your medical bill. I've fought my medical bill a few times because they thought I would automatically pay for their "errors".

americans tend to do yearly health check ups which isn't that common (the uk doesn't do it for instance) which significantly increases 5 year cancer survival rates as so many more are caught early, and the eu as a whole is brought down by consistently poor performing countries like poland
the usa is decent and if you're rich it's easily one of the best countries but overall most western european countries are comparable or outright better
