Academics always were the marxist types, its not really a new thing, it's just that everything is becoming more politicised and extreme now so its become more visible. In the past the politics of university lecturers didn't matter much and no one really cared.

Its because Academy is by definition progressive. Only Marxism is truly progressive. Reactionarism, conservatism and general chuddetry is the antithesis of academia and intellectuality
