C-3PO is great because he's one of the least heroic characters on the team along with Han (at least initially). He adds some richness to the dynamic of the main party by being a coward who just wants to survive the events of the story.
R2 is just cute and brave which is fine because that's all he needs to be but C-3PO is more unique.
