I find his movies disturbing. And Starship Troopers is basically promoting neo nazism. Why is he considered good?

its amazing how for over 30 years, scores of both leftists and right-wingers have been seething over Verhoeven's films because they're to stupid to understand satire

I understand satire just fine, what he's doing isn't it

the problem with starship troopers in particular is that people get all the way into the fascist atmosphere of the movie because on the other side there are GIANT KILLER SPACE INSECTS.

so, obviously, the whole irony/satire/criticism doesnt work, the enemy doesnt have a face, doesnt have a culture, their just fucking space bugs.

that means he is dumb? yes.

No, it totally works and you're just a pseud. If satire didn't filter people it wouldn't be satire.

but verhoeven movies during this period are just satire, people know that are satire and they enjoy it anyway knowing its a satire, because he end it up doing the target of the satire into soething cool - like robocop or the army in ST.

it remind me the RLM criticism of the film, mike wanted to open a dialogue with the insects because star trek. LOL

what the fuck? how? they come up with an impossible enemy to even try to understand, just fucking kill these things and move on.

and verhoeven is still doing movies and its hard to know whats the message anymore because theyre a mess. didnt watch the nun porn but ELLE was like he was trying to ape pedro almodovar but failing because its a mess with a bunch of messages going nowhere.

at this point its hard to know what is he trying to say and what is dementia.

>the humans started the war
>the political apparatus is totalitarian
>this means an external enemy is useful to them by way of moral hazard
>the characters in that environment are mindless and it's up to the viewer to critique their motivations
Simple as. If someone is filtered they're filtered. Satire works on levels and people drawn into it for the wrong reasons are faced with reality if they notice the deeper meaning. (I'm not saying Starship Troopers is highbrow, but there's a reason satire was used to criticize totalitarian regimes). This was satire: youtu.be/T1h1NJMKtnc

>Also, this painting isn't ironic (i.e. satire). It's meant to be sincere
Forgot pic.

>dude hehe us centrists with no opinions on anything out of a fear of being vulnerable are so smart bro

agreed, but in the universe of the film there is a bunch of GIGANTIC IRRATIONAL KILLING MACHINES INSECTS that need to be done with.

the fact that is really hard to get the message in a visceral way because the its not ENEMY MINE, were there is a humanoid alien, its a bunch of fucking bugs.

and ironically enough the whole totalitarism thing end up making people puting their cultural differences aside to fight the insects, so it wasnt that bad.

No, the insects are never understood as more than that by the characters just like it's never explicitly stated that we're actually the ones invading their territory. When there's the opportunity to understand their motivations the human characters rejoice in the fact the enemy is afraid (i.e. zero empathy). It's the viewer's job to notice that and reflect on it. We're exposed to obvious murder porn in the form of their propaganda announcements (e.g. feeding the cow) and we see the characters being taught in high school about how hard it is to exterminate the insects in comparison to killing humans (i.e. their lens isn't toward understanding the insects as anything other than a threat; you can go even further and read in the implied heroism undertaken by the military to measure up to such a threat--human ability to kill the insects is funneled as a mark of pride).

I get your criticism but it's better applied to something like Fight Club. The film version drastically changes the ending of the story and turns the protagonist into a hero while giving the cult (which most people don't even realize was a cult) an honorable mission (that ends in success--the buildings explode in the background while the Pixies blare and the hero who just shot himself in the mouth kisses the girl).

yes good points an on unfortuantely you're arguing with a retard but I feel bad, so here, have a (You)

>Retards we're shitting on Benedetta
Jesus Christmas....

I don't know if he's a retard. He hasn't been disingenuous at all and I usually don't start throwing around that word and intentionally trying to embarrass someone until it gets to that.

Also, everyone gets filtered by satire sometimes. The point is reflecting on that as an opportunity when it's pointed out to you and not being dogmatic about it (satire also works by pulling people's character out into the open).

Beverly Hills 90210 IN SPACE!!!. Your not supposed to take it too seriously.

But he failed to make satire. Only satirical part is commercial sequence.

>the problem with starship troopers in particular is that people get all the way into the fascist atmosphere of the movie because on the other side there are GIANT KILLER SPACE INSECTS.
that's because people are too stupid to see that humanity instigated the war against the bugs, who have no FTL travel whatsoever, humanity was expanding, encountered the bugs in their home system, and then started attacking them

and something everyone overlooks is that the asteroid hitting Buenos Aires was not only not fired by the bugs (they are LIGHTYEARS away and the most advanced thing the bugs had were biological corrosive discharge, they have neither the capability nor the intelligence to launch an asteroid to Earth) but was also allowed through by the government (they show the orbital defence system in one of the propaganda films, which somehow didn't detect or shoot down this asteroid before it hit the planet) because it gave them a plausible reason to declare war on this species that is no threat to earth at all

>Starship Troopers is basically promoting neo nazism

This is the smoothbrained half-wit interpretation of that movie.

But that doesn't make movie satire. Yes, if you think about it, there is no way bugs could send meteors to earth. It was false flag to justify war on bugs.

Another retard bites the dust. Starship Troopers actually shows that that society is fucked up and horrible but you're too dense to understand satire. Fuck off back to capeshit zoomer

I'll accept the orbital defense system thing but the bugs are on multiple planets (so they must be able to travel somehow and we know they're coordinated via the brain bugs). Also, I think you're generally right in that the bugs seem to be on their heels and fighting defensively (i.e. they're only engaging at the periphery and we don't see any major offensive weapons or counter attacks).

All I know is Total Recall had potholes you could launch a spacecraft through. But I still loved it.
