If you have something nice in your life, everyone, including your closest friends are ready to take you down and tell you why you shouldn't be enjoying yourself. Instead of trying to enjoy their life or make it better, they will try to drag down everyone that seems to be doing better than them. I think here the problem is that thanks to the welfare state everyone has a fairly equal starting point, so failing to get into higher education for example is a persons own fault and not just a matter of impersonal circumstances. Thus blue collars endlessly seethe about people with university degrees.
