i like dickens. dickens isn't known for his realistic dialogue, he used exaggerated archetypes like thieves, down and out workers, street urchins, sadistic authority figures and callous lords to tell a story that reflected his reality strongly. The wire does the same, its a great collection of stories.
The shield has a different approach, in that the characters and dialogue are more grounded and seem like you could encounter them in real life, but the story itself is more shakespearean. its all about the clash between vic's gang and the good but still somewhat comprimised cops. these two factions are built up very dramatically in a conflict filled with exciting twists and turns. the wire does much the opposite with its procedural stuff. I can understand why some prefer the shield for this reason. At the end of the day they are both fictional shows that use realistic elements in different ways.
