But the sheer fact that those cities are some of the cleanest most efficiently run cities in the world is a testimony to how civilized the Japanese are. It really is mind blowing. Aside from that Japanese small towns and villages have a lot more room and are some of the nicest places to live in earth.

The fact that japan has the lowest job satisfaction in the world and one of the highest suicide and depression rates in the world (only slightly better than south korea) only goes to show that it doesn't mean shit if everyone who lives in your country is depressed, lonely, and living in crammed houses. And yeah "there are countryside houses and jobs" and all that, but generally the country is still a massive neon light show that looks nice to people who love looking at bright colors all day long. Besides, literally any upside you can give to japan, is done 1000x better in countries like switzerland, norway, and belgium.

Your characterization of japan sounds like someone who's only seen it on TV. Tokyo is not representative of all of Japan. And if you've travelled the country you would know that. Obviously like any society it has it's flaws. The work life balance is partly due to competition in the labor force and Japanese attitudes towards work. Which is in my opinion one of the best things about them. You could go anywhere in Japan. A convenience store, a gas station, a train ticket booth and the person working their gives 100% at their job. It really is astonishing and that's not something you see anywhere else in the world. They take pride in their work no matter what they do. The collective is more important than the individual and that's why Japan has a uniquely disciplined culture. Public Spaces are spotless and clean. There is an over abundance of concenience and public services. Everything runs efficiently. Food quality is probably the highest in the world. Japan is unique. The high suicides rates are due to people that can't handle the high standards of Japanese society. You could even argue that that's not necessarily a bad thing. People that don't cut it are removing themselves from that society due to a strong sense of personal shame. Something most societies lack. You could even argue that it's for the greater good of that society.
