While India hasn't invaded a lot of its neighbours, this is primarily because India is a young country. Historically, the kingdoms of ancient India have been quite unpleasant towards their neighbours, inside and outside the subcontinent.
More concerning is how India treats its neighbours and its own people. India treats Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh with utter disdain. India also refuses to play nice with its extended neighbours of Oman, China/Tibet, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia. Not one of the countries would stick its neck out for India in the event of crisis or war.
It's a small miracle that India has even survived into the 21st century as an intact nation. It has no friends and few allies, aside from foreign investors who seek to directly and permanently impoverish and indenture the Indian working class, while the nation itself is an uneasy alliance between dozens of major ethnic groups and a hostage situation towards its minor ethic groups. That country is a tinderbox. Eventually the people of India will realize that their ruling class is a parasite, and civil war will dissolve that country into at least half a dozen states.
