Afaik they didn't purchase the rights to the silmarillion, only the hobbit, so they're gonna make everything up

I heard the same thing when the show was announced but I believe they eventually got some rights to the Silmarillion's material, otherwise some of the stuff they showed in the trailer (like the two Trees) shouldn't be there won't be
