Some tricks for your red points.
>Botswana
Something notable about Botswana is it's supposed to be the best Subsaharan African country in terms of quality of life. Knowing that made me memorize where it is. It also helps that it's near South Africa and Rhodesia for the memes.
>Gambia
Just remember that it's The Gambia as in a river. So it's shaped like a river.
>Senegal
It's the country that surrounds Gambia so I just pair them up in my head.
As for your other red ones near Gambia and Senegal, I have no idea. Everywhere between Gambia and Nigeria is always a guessing game for me.

Like I said to Italanon above, Botswana you can learn is supposed to be the best quality of life in that region. Malawai I know only because I read an article about an eccentric dictator they had who had a love of Greek and Roman classics and went out of his way to hire posh British classicists to teach their elite school.

I think I actually got Ghana and Ivory Coast right through dumb luck but I'll try to remember that. Do you know any cultural or historical trivia about the others that might stick out? For example I usually get Liberia right just because I know it was established for our freed slaves and that Sierra Leone is just west of it.

The Canaries are a Spanish possession while the other islands are independent. They did not include the island of Reunion because that is a French possession, for example, but the other Indian Ocean islands had to be identified because they are independent.
Kek I got Swaziland and Lesotho through dumb luck. Also Swaziland has a new name but I can't remember it and probably won't ever remember it.
