Thing is, shouldn't the border go all the way to include Kales/Calais and Bonen/Boulogne-sur-Mer? They are important ports for sea trade to Britain and the Altantic.

You do realise that the southern Netherlands (Flanders, Wallonia, Luxemburg, Hainaut...) were more apart from the northern Netherlands than together the last 1000 years?
Those great painters were catholic, as was their southern homeland. The north became calvinist heretics, polderjews who touted that they would be rather Turkish than Roman.
